Information and enlightenment from the M5.1 Guye, Tangshan earthquake on 12th July,2020

  • On July 12, 2020, the earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred in Tangshan Guye, whose strong-motion affected Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan area, especially strong shocks also appeared in Beijing urban area. A large number of strong-motion records were obtained from the network of strong-motion observation stations, the national network of seismic intensity rapid observation stations and the structural response monitoring arrays of typical building structures. The magnitude of this earthquake is small, but it provides abundant information for seismic scientific research. Based on the information obtained on the impact of the earthquake, the following studies can be carried out: ① The rapid calculation and analysis of seismic intensity and the reliability detection of the network function based on the intensive observation records of rapid seismic intensity report network near and in the area of earthquake; ② Discussion on the influence of deep covered soil layers and basin site on ground motion based on the observed strong-motion records in Beijing and Tianjin area; ③ Study on the attenuation characteristic of ground motion in Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan area based on the strong-motion observation records from epicenter to 300 km; ④ Analysis of seismic response characteristics of typical engineering structures by using the strong-motion records from the structural response monitoring array in Beijing urban area; ⑤ Others, such as study on inversion of soil layer parameters and engineering structure parameters. In this paper, the preliminary results of the relevant research were introduced, and further exploratory analysis and study were conducted onthe  above  research  issues, and the results show the rich information from the M5.1 Guye, Tangshan earthquake, and the potential contribution to the relevant research.
