Study on the seismic distribution and migration law of North-South seismic belt in China

  • In this paper, the distribution law of natural earthquakes from 780 BC to the present with magnitude of MS5 and larger at region of longitude 22°—35° and latitude of 100° to 110° (China’s north and south seismic belt) was discussed by means of mathematical statistics. The whole transfer image of strong earthquakes in this area is plotted by GMT software, and the regularity of seismicity in north-south seismic belt is analyzed. The study shows that the large and strong earthquakes in this area all occurred on the fault zone, with high earthquake frequency, dense epicenter, clustered characteristics, and high seismic activity. The south-central segment of the seismic zone is similar, with significant differences from the northern segment. In the north-south seismic belt, the duration of the active and calm events of the earthquake is related to the intensity of the active curtain. The results provide a meaningful reference to understand the characteristics of the temporal and spatial distribution of earthquakes, the seismogenic laws of China’s north and south seismic belt, and the seismogenic and earthquake-producing periods of earthquakes.
