Zhang Hongyi wrote a memorial for officers and soldiers died in the earthquake: Addendum to “Zhang Hongyi, the pioneer of earthquake scientific investigation in the Republic of China”

  • On the morning of Jul. 31, 1917, officers and soldiers of 12th regiment Yunnan Jingguo army corps were suddenly hit by a major earthquake during their march, and more than 300 people died. In April of the following year, officers and soldiers of 12th regiment held a public memorial ceremony on Daguan County Jilipu Huangjin Dam and erected a monument to memorize their comrades. Zhang Hongyi was the colonel secretary of Yunnan provincial governor’s office at the time and wrote a very moving eulogy. It is the first and the only time in the history of earthquake disasters in our country that an eulogy was written to memorize the officers and soldiers died in an earthquake in public, and it is worthy of eternal history.
